World Cup Diary - Day One

So that’s day one of the world cup over. In the last couple of days I have heard comments from goalies about the balls being too light and moving a lot in the air. On today’s evidence you can see why. There are already a couple of contenders for goal of the tournament from Lahm and Frings of Germany. Certainly the Germans look favourites to win their group. Poland now have an uphill battle to make the next round while I wouldn’t like to say who out of Costa Rica and Ecuador should join the Germans, neither looked than impressive and shouldn’t trouble England too much if they meet them in the second round.

Germany 4 – 2 Costa Rica
Oh, how I wanted Costa Rica to win, and when they equalised after 12 minutes I even thought they had a chance. Sadly there defence was worse than the Germans. A couple of cracking goals from the Germans to start and finish things off, though defensively they look rather vunerable.

Poland 0 – 2 Ecuador
Surprise result given Poland were expected to join Germany in the second round from this group. Ecuador quailed following an impressive home record including a win over Brazil. Most felt though this was more to do with the opposition sides not being familiar with playing at altitude. Credit where its due though, they thoroughly deserve today’s win.
