Google Nexus S and Gingerbread Arrive

nexussSo the rumours last week said Google was set to announce some sort of release for Chrome OS and an early adopters netbook running the OS tomorrow. So today we have already had Google eBooks and now its the turn of the Nexus S and Gingerbread or Android 2.3.

The handset sporting a 4” AMOLED screen, 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 16GB flash memory, front & rear facing cameras, Near Field Communication technology and Android 2.3 pre-loaded amongst other things will be available in the US and UK before Christmas.  As for Gingerbread, it boasts a refreshed user interface, VoIP support with a SIP account and improved keyboard.

Being a cynic, I’m left thinking, why all the fuss?  It looks ok but nothing amazing. I guess that’s Gingerbread is just Android 2.3, and not as was rumoured version 3. Maybe Google would have been better waiting until version 3 of Android was ready before releasing its latest Nexus device. Certainly from the information currently available I’ll be in no hurry to give up my HTC Desire, though the geek in me is hoping Gingerbread will work on my Desire and be available sooner rather than later.

Does Google have anything else tucked up its sleeves for today, or do are they now done ready for tomorrow and the anticipated Chrome OS launch?
