Dennis Vial V Doug Doull - 2000/1 ISL

Last month I posted some videos  featuring a some fights from a memorable hockey game between the Sheffield Steelers and Manchester Storm from the 2000/1 ISL season.  That year both teams featured a couple of players who also played the role of enforcer in the NHL. Earlier that year the two traded blows in an early season match up between the two teams.

The previous season the Steelers had brought in former Ottawa Senators hard man Dennis Vial after a poor start. Vial instantly became a fan favourite in the steel city, featuring in many a memorable brawl and captaining the team to a memorable grand slam in the 2000/1 season.  Doug Doull joined the Storm at the start of the 2000/1 season and only played 15 games, before returning state side to join the AHL St John Flames.

By the time the New Years Eve line brawl took place, Doull had left the Storm for the AHL.  Earlier in the the season, the veteran Vial had shown Doull he still had a thing or two to learn if he wanted to drop them with the big guns.  Clearly Doull did learn a thing or two as he later became one of only a handful of players to have played in the UK, to have later gone on to play in the NHL, playing 37 games predominantly with the Boston Bruins.
